Job Title: Certified Surgical Technician
Department: Surgery Department
Immediate Supervisor: Director Surgical Services
Sterile scrub, arranging instruments on mayo stand and instrument stand; aids circulator in counting sponges, passes instruments, aids in cleaning operating rooms after surgery, aids in preparing suite for the days surgery scheduled. Under supervision of Licensed OR Tech or Licensed RN.
Licensed OR tech, or currently enrolled in Operating Room Technician, classes.; Licensed within 6 months of hire. AHA BLS certification. SECURE training
Must have knowledge of policies/procedures of Surgery Department and Harrisburg Medical Center Personnel Policies. Completion of orientation as structured and in-services. Safety and infection control protocols for patients, visitors, and self. Able to perform care as Operating Room Technician-under supervision of licensed OR Tech or Licensed RN, for all age patients at 100% competency level. The staff member must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit. The staff member must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and process the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed by the (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, or geriatric) patient group.
Ensures the Operating Room is clean and ready to be set up, then prepares the instruments and equipment needed for surgery. Counts all sponges, instruments, needles and other tools and preserves the sterile environment. Selects and passes the appropriate instrument to the surgeon. Assists in putting away supplies and packs. May aid in orientation of new personnel by explaining and demonstrating techniques and methods used in the Operating Room. Must attend “Handle With Care” training annually. Must attend service excellence training.
